Seemal Desai, MD, an expert in skin of color and disorders of pigmentation, led an enlightening session on the management of dyschromias.
In this session, Dr. Desai detailed the ins and outs of treating melasma, including mainstays of therapy such as hydroquinone and azelaic acid. He explained that despite publicized concern over the use of hydroquinone, there is no substantial evidence to prove its carcinogenicity and regimens containing this medication remain the gold-standard. Nonetheless, it remains important to discuss long-term use with every patient.
Dr. Desai then moved on to talk about newer therapies such as kojic acid dipalmitate, soy, methimazole, and tranexamic acid. He offered clinical pearls for the treatment of melasma with chemical peels, before transitioning to an exciting discussion of vitiligo. This proved to be a very practical and useful session for attendees.
